I know there have been tons of threads on this, but I've tried everything, by everything I mean:
  • Resetting the power manager (as told by Apple kBase)
  • Ejecting via iTunes
  • Ejecting via OpenFirmware

And probably some more ways, the CD does not show up in the Finder and I realized it went in funny, but stupid as I am, I continued to put it in.

Since this PB is now out of warranty, I think I have 2 options. Take apart the PB and take out the super drive and see what I can do there. Or buy a new Superdrive from PowerbookMedic.com and install that. Anyone else got any ideas that could save the Superdrive?

Thanks,
Oliver

I can't offer any help except to recount what happened to me. About two months ago, as I was ejecting a CD, I tried inserting another one and moved too fast, incoming colliding with outgoing. After that, the drive only worked for reading but wouldn't burn anymore.

We have had a long relationship with a local dealer so I took the computer to them. It was out of warranty but they ran a hardware diagnostic on the machine to get a repair estimate while we went out for coffee. When we got back, she said it was fixed, no charge. I was surprised but she said she merely ran a utility that is included on all powerbooks and it detected a (head?) out of place and reset it.

Good luck,
Sally

Did you try holding down the mouse button while the computer is booting up?

I had a CD that I couldn't seem to eject, either -- although I am fairly sure it was inserted properly.

Using Disk Utility I was able to eject it even though it didn't show up in the finder.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Have you tried inserting an open paperclip in the right side of the drive to hit eject button?

on my old ibook g4 (a major lemon), the hd died and didnt show up in the disk utility. it was wierd when we finally got it to show up, it said a bunch of jibberish, then it was 0 kb. when it got to apple, it started working again (with no data (i was gunna back it up the next day) they reinstalled os x on the same drive, and it lost all its data again. moral: if a diskworks once or twice in the computer, and acts funny hardware wise, dont push yer luck. it could have gotten jammed, and made the superdrive think there is no disk in there. (tray drives open with cd, or no cd) if thats the case, i think you need a new drive.

Yes--try the manual eject on the right side of the drive--use a paperclip.

Just ran Software Update and installed "Slot Combo Drive Update", which apparently just came out. It is supposed to fix drives that won't eject discs. Try giving this a shot.

Title: How to eject a disc from the PowerBook G4 disc drive

The text discusses three ways to eject a disk and one of the ways is this one:

"Restart the Computer
You can eject a disc from the drive by restarting the computer and holding down the trackpad button while the computer starts up. Press the trackpad button until the disc is ejected."

Th TIs do have a manual eject that you can get to with a paperclip... it's somewhere in the knowlege base.

I never had to remove a disc that way from within my TI, but I have done it on an iMac before, and it worked fine!

I actually did that on my old Ti667 (playing around and a cd got stuck). The paperclip worked excellently (i'm not even sure that's a word).

Anyone know if that "hidden" eject button is there on the AlBooks?
