Via firewire with target disk mode would be the fastest way to do it. I'd recommend Carbon Copy Cloner to make sure permissions and ownership aren't messed up in the process. Or via ethernet scp, psync, et all.
Happily using a Mac since '89

The easiest way by far is to reboot your TiBook while holding down the "T" key. It will then display a firewire symbol on the screen indicating that it is in what's called Firewire target disk mode. Essentially, you machine is no longer a Mac, it's an external firewire hard drive. Just plug it into your new Powerbook and copy your files over.

When you're done, eject the "hard drive" from the new Mac. Then press the power button to shut the TiBook down.

If you do clone your existing OS X installation to your new Powerbook, it won't boot. See http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=210772

I cloned my stuff over. Then I used the Powerbook restore DVD to do an archive and install of the newer system.

You guys may not be able to help me, but will I be able to use firewire to transfer files from my PC to my PB? I'm planning on just using my wireless network for most small files, but for large files (DV files) I'd like to be able to transfer them quickly, like with firewire.

yes, do target disk mode (command-t) on yer powerbook, then it will mount on your pc im pretty sure. it might not if windows doesnt support mac os formatted disks. just give it a try.

What if I wanted to go the other way? Like if I capture the video to my PC and then transfer it to my PB to edit it. My PC has tons of extra space to hold lots of DV files, but my PB doesn't really, so this is the more likely problem. But once I've edited it, I'll probably want to transfer it back to the PC in its uncompressed glory at that point, and then I can use my PB as an external firewire drive (hopefully).

firewire isnt one way. you can just open the mac hd on the pc then navigate to the place where you want to save it, then pull it from your pc.

Oh. LOL! I need to pull my head out. Right, I was totally thinking it was a one way process, thanks for the clarification.

I just figured that the Albook wouldn't be able to receive files if it was in that mode, for some stupid reason. Obviously I've never done it before or I would have known better.

Thanks again.

no problem, i just hope that there is a way for pcs to read mac formatted disks. if it doesn't by default, look for an app that installs a drivers that make windows able to read mac disks.

FYI!

The target disc mode did not work when I tried it between my XP computer and my Powerbook. So, I'm transfering files via my wireless network, which is working very nicely.

Use Ethernet instead of wifi, much faster......

I did a clone using CCC from my 1.25Ghz 15" with 10.3.3 to the new 1.5Ghz 15" and used the new PB's Restore DVD to Upgrade the cloned drive.

Note I used Upgrade and not Archive and Install... doing it this way allowed me to have a working identical setup without having to re-install most of my software (even my Pro Apps - Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro - came across without a problem). Just had to fix a few preference settings and re-install Stuffit.
