Ok, I will be a first time mac owner when my powerbook gets here on Wensday. My question is what do you think about formating and fresh installing OS X when it gets here?

I guess a follow up question, how much "extra" stuff does apple install on new machines?

I always do a fresh install when I get my new Macs. I do a custom install leaving out all the printer drivers and languages. I also get rid of Classic
as I have no use for OS9. And yes, you learn things along the way so that you are not scared of doing installations when needed.

I do a fresh install for the same reason as Peter. I like installing only the languages I intend to use, and I have no use for Classic.

First time mac owner soon. Can't you just uninstall all the stuff you don't need?

Ok, I think I will leave the factory install for a couple of weeks, learn some stuff, then when finals are over and I have more time do a fresh install of the OS.

its not a big deal on the new computers to uninstall the printer drivers, and extra languages because of all the disk space in the new ones. on my ibook g3, it was an issue, and uninstalled everything to basic. i actually do reinstalls quite often when i get GOD GET RID OF THESE STUPID ADDS! anyways back to the subject i reinstall to clean out unused everything pretty much. its quicker to just back it all up and install the apps i need again, to clean oout all the crap that accumulates. i do this about once every 6 months.

How is that possible ?

Good idea for new owners is play with it like that, see what you need (I always install everything except langauges... just in case) and then format, create partitions, and reinstall all

Then move home to second partition for later reinstalls (I reinstalled once when I got Panther : that's once in 2.5 years )
