Hi,

I posted a while ago about upgrading an ibook (600mhz) to a 40gb 5400 Hard Drive and a Toshiba DVD-R drive.

My "new" ibook runs great. It doesn't get hot, and is perfect for browsing and light applications. (I sold my 17" powerbook, so I probably will be looking into something else in a little while).

I burned my first dvd and it worked perfectly, this is a great upgrade to have!!

I think I'll be keeping this ibook as my main laptop, and I will do another mod in painting the top and bottom cases black (can't be done too well with the newer models). If anyone is interested I'll try update on this.

My question is this - with the 5400 Hard Drive - I notice that when I put my ear to the palmrest there is constant spinning. When I had the 20gb hard drive it didn't seem to do this. Is this normal? The spinning of the drive is not loud (I have to put my ear to it to hear it), but I was wondering if this was a bad thing.

Have any of you had similar findings with a 5400 Hard Drive?

Please let me know,
Thanks!!

Glad to hear your upgrade to the 5400rpm drive (and DVD burner) went smoothly. What a nice upgrade! It makes me want to get a DVD-burner in my next 'Book as well.

IMO, the constant spinning of drive is not a problem. My guess is that you simply never stuck your ear to your iBook before installing the new drive. Have you checked your power saving preferences? Whether the disk drive spinns down to save power or not is up to your choice (assuming the new drive is properly supported by the preference setting).

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.
