I'm about to upgrade the CPU in my Pismo 500 with the Powerlogix 1 GHz G3 upgrade. I have been reading user reports on xlr8yourmac.com and it seems people either have a wonderul experience with it, or a horrible one.

Has anyone here done the upgrade, and, if so, what was your experience?

There was a thread here, about a year back, over the 900MHz G3 upgrade. Most of the experiences seemed to be quite good.

This is not quite to the point, but might be interesting anyway. About two years ago I upgraded my 400 MHz Pismo with the Powerlogix G4 500. Everything went smooth and the performance jump was quite remarkable. I was happy with the setup for somewhat over a year, when the firewire ports quit working (apparently a weak spot in the pismo). I sent it in for repair under Apple care, but from that point on, the upgraded logic board never worked again. I had to send in the Pismo twice more, with the result that Apple replaced the logic board downgrading the processor to a G3 500 (for free).

The upgrade seemed to work great as long as the rest of the system did, but caused additional trouble when another component related to the logic board failed.

I'm a walking, talking case of a happy experience with a Powerlogix CPU upgrade. I took the plunge and upgraded my 400 mhz Pismo to 900mhz back in Summer 2003 and I've never looked back, errr... not until I got my 15" 1.25 Ghz... In all honesty, that Pismo seems just about as fast as this new machine. I'd recommend the Powerlogix for sure.

I guess the only important part is making sure that you get the thermal paste and heatsink on correctly... not that it's hard, but that's the only critical part. Good luck.

You need to add the Pismo back to your signature. It is more important than you AlBook.
