My 15" 1.25 has developed a bad habit recently. If you don't physically keep some pressure on the lid (with your hand, a book, sandwiched in a bag, whatever) the lid opens just enough (without releasing the latch) to wake up the machine. The lid has always had some give to it when latched, and the physical amount of wobble doesn't appear to have changed. The waking up thing, however, is becoming a problem. If you close the lid and let go, it will try to go to sleep and then less than a second later the Apple lights back up and the optical drive makes its favorite noise.

So... anyone know if I can deal with this without surrendering to AppleCare for a few days?

You can get around this by setting the Powerbook not to wake when the lid is opened. (you'll have to press a key or plug in a USB device to wake it.)
Here's how you do that:
in Terminal type: sudo pmset lidwake 0 then type your password when prompted. If you want to return to the normal operation, type sudo pmset lidwake 1 .

For some reason this is not a feature accessible from the Energy Saver Preference Pane but it works and is documented in the pmset man page.

Thanks for the tip! Where do you find the documentation for this stuff? Kind of silly Apple doesn't have it in the pref pane, but I wonder if there are other options I'd be interested in too.

You can get around this with software, but you have a hardware problem there. It's probably not a feature in the preferences because people would then wonder why their machine was not waking up when they open the lid! The sleep switch is not working properly or the magnet that activates it has moved out of place. Take your machine to an Apple store. They should be able to help you out.
