I've been an owner of an 800MHz G3 iBook, and know of their usefulness and durabilitiy. We're thinking of getting one for the 'art room'; it may get some ink/paint spills, (but not much), but really, mostly taken care of.

What in your opinion would be the best price/performance for each of the G3/G4 iBooks? I've noticed on Apple's site that there are 800MHz G4 refurbs going for $749. That's not bad. On the other hand, there are older G3 models on eBay going for near that price! What would be the price thresholds you'd pay for each white iBook model? (Obviously, I'm not asking for a comprehensive list, well, maybe I am.)

Thoughts?

Thanks.

OK.

It was late at work

Of the existing models, which price point would you pay:
12"
500MHz used -- good cond.
600MHz used -- good cond.
700MHz used -- good cond.
800MHz used -- good cond.
800MHz G4 refurbished

and of these, which are the best value; i.e., "$500 for a 500MHz is not as good value as a $600 600MHz because, the 600MHz gives you x, y, z..., but $700 for a 700MHz is not as good because you lose x and y..."

that kind of response. iBook market experts/followers?

...

?

First off, I don't like to buy things on ebay, they always seem to go for way more money than they are worth (but that is just my bias).

If it were me I would look at a refurb G4 ibook. The G4 ibooks will have a longer useful life as many of the "i" software packages are optimized for the G4 as is the OS itself. I would also consider that the final few revs of the G3 ibooks seemed to have had more than their share of problems (namely the faulty logic board) which the G4 ibook appears not to have.

If I couldn't swing a G4 ibook or I needed an ibook that could still boot to OS 9 I wouldn't look at any G3 ibook older than the 800mhz G3 since that was the first one to sport 32mb VRAM (which is a huge help in the latest version of the OS).

In either case I would be inclined to get an Apple refurb as opposed to a used machine simply because they come with the same warranty as a NEW ibook.

Does that help at all?
