I am thinking about selling my iMac 15" 800 and buying a PB 12" 867 SD. The price is looking really attractive to me, and I have decided that I want a mobile computer, as I am a grad student and want to work in the library and coffee shops etc.

I have some questions about how well it will suit my needs though, and was wondering if anyone who has an 867 could help me out.

I know an 867 will do great for web surfing, email, word processing, mp3's, etc, but was wondering how it will do with light video editing using iMovie and playback of large video files.

I am really unhappy with my iMac 800 (768 MB) for video processing and playback. It does much, much worse than my previous computer, a Fujitsu lifebook C series. That computer displayed crystal-clear mpegs, etc with few skips or delays.

My iMac handles video *much* more poorly--it's choppy, blurry, and frequently freezes up when I attempt to play large video files. I need a new computer, but want to keep the price dow. I will sell the iMac on eBay, and for the new computer I want to stay within a couple hundred bucks of whatever I can get for that.

What kind of video card does the 867 PB have? Is it expandable? What is the min amount of RAM you suggest for my needs?

Any ideas?

I don't know much about how well the Rev A performed, but I do know that most prices there are pretty close to the iBook G4 12" 800MHz and for whats its worth I'd rather get the iBook due to people really complaining about the 12" PB Rev A. The iBook doesn't get as hot, has better GPU, better screen, and is roughly the same computer as the Rev A PB other then it not having audio in (iMic from Griffen takes care of this problem), and closed lid mode (which you can have with a small lil hack), and of course 67MHz difference. Whichever machine you get, bump up the RAM as much as you could afford, 512MB is about $120 nowadays. To answer your questions the 12" Rev A has a Nvidia GeForce4x video card, cant upgrade any portable's GPU but you can void the warranty and add a faster HD to speed things up a bit, I would only get 640MB or higher in the Rev A (Apple says 640 is max but I've seen units that have 1.12RAM, Trans. Int. sells it for a hefty price). If portability isn't a concern and video is get the new eMac's, if portability is a concern I'd get an iBook G4, but thats only one iRez's opinion.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)
