I'm in the mood to buy one. How doe's it compare to previous models?
What would be the approx speed increase from an AGP G4 upgraded to 1Ghz with a Radeon 8500 and 1.5Gb of ram?

I bought one on Wednesday, I have an order acknowledgement but not a ship date yet. But I don't really have anything to compare it to, since my current laptop is a Pismo. They listed 3-5 days for shipping.

At least the shipping date is reassuring. I'm planning a purchase in the next 2 or 3 weeks. At least, I won't have to wait for a 4 to 5 weeks shipping date.

Here's a thread I started asking the same question.
I'm sure the 1.5Ghz is somewhat faster compared to the 1.33GHz model especially if you opt for the faster hard drive & 128 vram card but probably not a huge improvement.
You're gonna love the 17" Powerbook either way thogh!

I picked up a new 17" PowerBook from the Apple Store 10 days ago. It replaces my iBook G4. I love this machine. Wonderful screen, quiet, and very fast. I got the stock Radeon 9700 and HD, then bumped up the RAM to 1 gig.
I went with the stock video card after reading some early results on BareFeats which seem to indicate the extra VRAM doesn't make the machine noticeably quicker in various tests. It'll probably come in handy down the line though for those of you doing a BTO from Apple online. I'll post a pic in the photo thread later.

There's quite a bit of subtle speed enhancements in these new Al PBs. I consider my revA PB17 (1GHz) with a 4200 rpm HD to at least feel faster than a dual 1GHz G4 desktop, both with 1 GB RAM. The desktop has a pair of 7200 rpm HDs.
I would think a 1.5 GHz model with a 5400 rpm HD would seem nearly twice as fast as the desktop model you describe.
I consider my PB17 to be the best purchase since I traded in my PB190 for a Pismo as one of the last Apple tradeins.

That's good news. I usually upgrade my system when I can at least double the performance. That why I waited so long to get a Powerbook. I almost bought a more performant G4 or a G5 more than once, but a Powerbook was what I really wanted. I was just no sure to invest that much for a 25% performance increase. But I guess now is the time.
