Hello. I'm a long time lurker in these forums and I finally figured I'd post something. As of tomorrow, I'll be the proud new owner of a BTO PB 15", fully tricked out, etc. Well, I currently own an iMac 800 G4 17". It's been a GREAT computer but I really need the mobility of a Powerbook. I love the iMac LCD screen and really don't want to have to buy another LCD so does anyone know of a way to use the iMac screen as an external display? Is there some sort of USB solution? I kinda doubt it but you never know. My second option is buying a Formac LCD display. Does anyone have experiences with these? Thanks.

It doesn't quite work that way. The iMac can't exactly be used as a monitor. It doesn't exactly have any video inputs.

You could use something like VNC to remotely control the Power Book. You would get the best results using IP over firewire (10.3 or later on both machines recommended for this), as the iMac only has 100Base-T. You won't be able to play video games this way. This also won't act as a "second" monitor. If you want an extended desktop for your PB, you need a new monitor.

Thanks. I thought as much. Well, guess it's eBay time for the iMac and time to start looking at a 20" LCD. Formac or Apple. That's the question.

Formac looks like the better choice now seeing how you wont need an adapter to hook it up to your PB, and also with less dead pixel reputation. Apple has the widescreen thing going on though. Both are awesome, but if I were you I'd stick it out a few months and hopefully Apple will update the monitor line, we'll see. If you dont wanna wait try Samsung LCD's, just ask tooki how well they perform.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)
