For anyone who wants to see my pics of the new machine disassembled, they are up at
http://www.digitalinterplay.com/12inch
I'll probably write a page with detailed pics rather then the scaled down broad pics, but for now here's some rev c disassembled pics. Not sure if they have been posted yet.

What was the purpose of this? Were you installing a new HD or something?

How is the performance gain from the new drive? Worth the money?
And how about noise/heat/battery llife? Anything different?

ye, i've had this drive in a tibook before.. xbench shows another 12 points, but it feels like another 25.. I have always noticed that the 7200 rpm drive really makes it feel much more loike a desktop. As far as heat, i'd say it's less... i know that is strange, but that's what it feels like on this machine.. it certainly isn't more. Noise is less.. power is abotu the same.. probably due to the power management system this drive uses.. there's a white paper on hitachi's site detailing it

Gah, scarry.
I once contemplated installing a new HD in my old iBook. This doesn't look like its any easier. I think I'll hold off on upgrading the HD on my new 12" PB for now

Is the new HD as noisy as the stock HD your PB had? I'm assuming you had a 4400rpm

As stated many, many times here with a simple search, the graphics *chip*, not card, is soldered to the motherboard in all current Powerbooks and all previous ones as far as I know. Apple has never had a way of upgrading the graphics without replacing the entire motherboard.

Those are older models and though I doubt Apple has changed it would still be nice to know. We can't get hold of these upgrade cards via retail channels anyway, can we? We won't know until PC laptopers tell us in several months.

No. As I said, I'm talking about the current models. In the current models, the graphics chip is soldered down. I've seen all these machines open. There is no way to upgrade the graphics chip. Period. Yes, it would be nice, but the space and cost required to allow such an upgrade would most likely increase the cost of the box and make 1 inch thick impossible. Have you ever seen inside a 17"? There's no extra room for anything in there.
Steve

ok a few things.
first i don't notice any difference negatively with the new drive
second, it wasn't hard, just time consuming and delicate work, you must be patient.
third I don't think the manuals listed above detail changing no user changable parts on powerbooks. i.e. the tibook explains how to change the hard drive as it was considered a user changable part, but a brief look through the 12" manual doesn't show that info
fourth, I am surprised by the number of views this thread got..
5th i like mine better then cowboy neil
