How does the iBook G4 14" 1GHz perform with applications such as Cubase, Maya, Premiere, Final cut pro and Shake? Do they run at all? I'm asking because I am getting a laptop and I cannot afford the Powerbook.

Also, when connecting an external monitor to the iBook, can I use higher resolution than 1024x768?

Thanks,
- F

My iBook runs Maya fine. It even booted the software with the factory 256 MB ram. I installed an extra third party 512 MB module, however.

Actually, that's not true. With the spanning hack much higher resolutions are supported.

Would the hack enable all the screen spanning features that are on the Powerbooks? Not just higher resolutions, but would the hack also support the screen alignment feature?

And replying to the original poster, the programs would run, but not at a fast enough speed to be productive for a professional.

I haven't tried the hack, but from what I've read, it allows you to place the second screen at any location relative to the LCD. If that's screen alignment, then yes. It's supposed to be functionally identical to the powerbook.
