I can hear the hard drive whirring with my head two feet away from the computer, which is pretty much how far I am from it during normal usage. Is this abnormal?

Well, I have the 12" with the 5400 drive and it is very quiet, the screen is gorgeous, almost as good as my 17". It is much better than my friends 12" rev A. It seems like Apple got this one right. It doesn't even get that warm even with processor intensive applications.

I was skeptical about ordering one with all the negative comments on the forum, but I'm glad I took the chance.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Now this is really bothering me haha. I'm pretty sure it's not the fan because the whirring is there the entire time the computer is on, from startup to shutdown.

I guess I'll call and see if I can get it replaced.

just kidding bout the fan thing, was a joke cause the powerbooks get so hot, and the fan constantly runs. i would call, but i dont think they will do anything, they only repair problems that prevent you from using the computer properly.

If the drive is making that much noise I don't see why Apple wouldn't see that it is a defective drive.

i have the 5400 rpm 80 gig drive on the 12 inch pwrbook. I can hear the harddrive while i;'m typing this. I f i step back to about two feet I can hardly hear it. I doesn't bother me and it isn't that loud. Are you on a Toshiba Hard drive? That's what I have. This machine is an awesome work. I can't believeit's capabilities.
