I had this occur just last night... I had my ibook sitting on the couch, I got up to change my son and when I got back I noticed it was just starting to wink off to go to sleep. I picked up the computer and could not wake it up at all. I tried everything but nothing seemed to work. I eventually had to remove the freakin' battery. After that it started up fine.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

The ibook is the latest model 14" 1 ghz w/256mbRAM (more on the way). Is this something that has shown up before and I just missed it? I did a search on these forums but didn't find anything that seemed applicable. I set the display/sleep for 1 and 2 minutes respectively for a test and it seemed to wake up without a problem, so I set it back to 30 and 45 minutes and have been going about my business.

The reason I am so curious about this is that I have only had it a few days and if it is something that has been identified as a hardware problem I'll drive back to the Apple Store and swap it for another one.

Thanks in advance.

I've had that happen on my iBooks rarely. Not sure why but its quite rare and in my case just situation dependent. Give it some time - if its happening a lot take it back.

Oh and I've never found a situation where I couldn't shut down the iBook by just pressing and holding the power button down for 5 seconds or so. Much easier than removing the battery.

Happen to me as well *checks uptime* for one day and ten hours ago. It was dry on battery, plugged in the power cord, and boom - nothing. It was like it was between getting net power and wanting to wake up from sleep from batteries, but of course it didn't manage it, so it just died. I just turned it on, and it was o-k again. It has happen to me before, but never in Panther. The log files didn't say much except it couldn't reach my cisco vpn driver. I would assume it means that it didn't manage to boot up the hard drive or something. BTW: My machine is over two y.o.

My friend's iBook G4 showed the same behavior twice this week.
  • iBook goes to sleep
  • he plugs in the power coords
  • the iBook stops to sleep (no blinking light) but remain black
  • he must reset
He is starting to worry now...
