A friend of mine has just come back from Shanghai and had brought me a few 'fake' DVDs. Anyway, the iBook (G4 12" 1ghz) can play them ok, but it tends to start stuttering and eventually says it can't read the DVD. My old PC's hitachi DVD drive and my living room Pioneer DVD player can play the same movies without problems.

Is this a common thing with the iBook's Combo drive?

If you can play U.S factory made and Macintosh burned copies of DVD's okay then it may not be a problem with the iBook. More than likely the bootleg DVD's your friend gave you were made on from a Windows machine and they were probably not burned to accomodate cross compatibility. Toast Titanium 6 gives the option before the copying process to burn the CD or DVD to play on Mac and Windows. Most home DVD players will play bootleg DVD's regardless of the platform that they were made from.

I understood that better quality drives were always more finicky than cheaper ones.
