Did you recently add more memory. Sometimes the memory is bad and could be causing the crashes you are having.

Have you installed any programs or made any modifications right before this trouble started?
Have you used disk utility and repaired permissions? Or used a program such as Cocktail and repaired permissions and other maintenance on the OS? The memory has been in since Christmas? If not, it could be bad ram.
Try repairing permissions and backtrack to what you did/installed right before the trouble started. Check ram if it's new.
You might have to backup and reinstall the OS as well. Start clean.

the only new thing used with the computer before the trouble happened was the use of an external hard drive (which i blame) for use with final cut pro by a friend of mine...he insists its not his fault...

Try repairing permissions. And if you have another user on your Mac, log in and see if the problems persist or if they're localized.

if he has a new ibook, then he doesnt have the panther install disks, and cant boot off of them to repair the disk... cos you cant unmount the drive with the os running (duh)
anyone know if one of the software restore disks has the disk utility on it?
cos that might work too. yeah.
