I need an external drive so I figure I will just replace my 12" drive and use the old drive in an enclosure..
I am looking at any 7200 rpm drive, what are my best options in drives 50GB or higher and what advice can you give besides get the right tools
this is a new one that just came out
http://www.computergiants.com/items/...subsubcat=1720
any others out there that would be worth looking at?
no apple care here to worry about

Have a look at barefeats.com. They have performance tests of 7200rpm drives. They are not that much faster than 5400rpm drives.
Did you think about an external 3.5inch case with a really fast 3.5 inch (10.000rpm or more) drive? This will not void your warranty and gives you premium performance at the desk.

my warrenty is gone, and wanted to use the old 4200 rpm drive in an enclosure for general use
just not sure how difficult it would be to rip apart the 12"
I have heard many different versions of the difficulty level

I would imagine that it would be a similar operation to this.

Here's a source for manuals,
http://home.earthlink.net/~strahm_s/manuals.html
also, check xlr8yourmac.com for reviews and instructions. That Toshiba didn't seem like a great deal, check for prices on the 7K60 on pricegrabber.com

videlan28,
You might want to consider the 60 GB Hitachi 7K60 drive as well - I just had it put in my 12" rev. B two weeks ago (had it done by a certified tech to preserve my warranty) and am very happy with it - the difference in speed is remarkable. FYI, here's a few links:
- Bare Feats HD speed test
- 12" HD swap instructions on xlr8yourmac.com
- Hitachi 7K60 on transintl.com ($230,00)
- Hitachi 7K60 on OWC/macsales.com ($279,99)
cheers
