Hi all,

A while back I posted about my iBook hard-crashing and thought it was due to a recently-installed memory module, which was replaced by the manufacturer.

Since then the crashes have continued, and become more and more frequent. I've tried a total of 4 different memory modules, so I don't think that's it. Today the iBook became unusable, after only a minute or so of up-time it crashes.

The symptoms are a complete freeze. The mouse vanishes, if I'm in terminal or a text editor, the cursor vanishes. The clock in the menu bar stops going. Everything stops. Closing the cover does not put the computer in sleep mode. The only thing that works at this stage is a hard reset, by holding the power key for 10 seconds.

It's even crashed while it was asleep. I've had times where I've put it to sleep at night, then in the morning I have woken up to the sound of the ibook fan going full-blast, the ibook case almost too hot to touch, and the system utterly unresponsive, requiring the hard-reset to shut it down.

Today's a holiday in Canada but I'll be calling Apple tomorrow to arrange having it repaired or replaced.

Interestingly, it worked fine in Target Disk Mode (except the screen went black after a minute or so), so I was able to do a complete backup using my iMac.

The iBook is a G4 12" 800MHz, purchased in February 2004.

Just wondering if anyone else has had or heard of similar problems? This has been going on for me since about March, but it has gradually escalated from once every 1 or 2 weeks up to now being a constant affair.

The fact that the screen goes black in target disk mode is a bad sign. You likely need a new logic board.
