I'm looking to purhcase a 12 or 15 inch powerbook and am concerend about all the posts that state how the powerbook becomes very hot very quickly. I plan on using it on my lap often and was wondering if that's possible without putting some sort of pillow or book underneath. Thanks.

I have a 15" Ti. I've played Quake 3 with it on my lap. It gets /quite/ warm, but handle-able if you're wearing pants. Just don't touch the top edge above the keyboard (if it's the same on newer models) - that area gets quite hot, maybe not enough to burn but it can hurt a little.

I'd recommend using a right-sized board underneath the PB when using it on your lap. I have a thick custom cut Alu plate for under the PB, that way I'm sure I don't block any of the vents it needs to cool off, and the plate dissipates some of the heat, so I don't suffer needlesly ; ) plus you have a solid underground, so you can't warp or scratch the underside of your PB ...

stuffing feathers up your b*tt doesn't make you a chicken.

i have a new 12" pb and the heat issue is there. it doesnt get to the point where it burns etc but it can be a bit unbearable. pillow, blanket, pants will be fine. its just a matter of comfort really. iirc, theres a product called the ilap, which are these two sponge like thingies that act as a pad for the pb to be placed on your lap w/o the heat problem

I like the looks and concept of the EZ Lap for $10 (I don't know anyone that has one, but the design allows for great heat dissipation and elevates the laptop on your lap for better angle.)

Plus, if you take it with you in your bag/backpack, it'll give just a little bit more protection on one side...
