I just received a new 15" PB 1.5GHz, 512 (one stick), 128MB VRAM. The machine is awesome in every respect exept one, it will not sleep or spin down the HD by itself. It will deep sleep if I explicitly tell it to by closing the lid or by selecting the 'Sleep' menu item.

I've tried resetting the PMU and zapping the PRAM but neither have helped. I've tried adjusting the settings by both the System Preferences and pmset command. I've even trashed the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file.

I just received the computer on Friday(May 21) and I do remember it working properly for the first few days. Is there anything else to try other than wiping the drive?

Try changing the sleep settings, closing the prefs, and then setting them to what you want.

Also be sure that you're setting it for the correct power source -- there are separate prefs for AC and battery.

Would you be able to hear the HD spinning down?
I barely can tell if it's the right fan or the harddisk I'm hearing. Obviously I've to play around a bit to get used to it (it's my first PowerBook).

Thanks, Michael.

It could be the fan, but I don't think so. I'll try to localize the sound and find some diagrams of where the fans are on the 'book.

Are there any utilities that will let me force the HD to spin down?

Good question - I'd suspect energy saver, OTOH I can't find anything special there what could help with this regard.

Michael.

Problem Solved!

It turned out to be the distccd daemon (part of the Xcode tools). It writes a line to the system.log file every second. I guess keeping the disk hot will do that. As soon as I disabled sharing my processor for compiles the computer would sleep normally.
