Anyone else had this?

My 5-week old (shiny) 512meg Powerbook now only shows 256megs of ram, the lower slot is flagged as not there. Noticed this for the first time today running FCE which used to work fine, which now says "I need at least 392megs of memory".

Switching ram chips around doesn't change the issue, so both ram chips are ok. It seems the lower slot has just stopped working... If I just boot up with one ram chip in lower slot, pbook beeps three times and refuses to boot. Using either chip in the other slot it boots fine.

I have tried reinstalling ram and trying to put the lower dimm in with some force - it seems to be in fine, the same as the slow above it, but no dice.

Resetted the PRAM, done the full reset from Apple's procedure and run the hardware test. All say lower slot buggered

Apple say I should send it back to them, but that's two weeks of downtime.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like what it sounds like. That RAM slot has gone off the deep end. You're probably better just resigning to sending the machine in. I don't suppose there is an Apple store conveniently where you are so that you can drop it off?

Apple gave my some authorised service centres in London, but they say repair will take 5 weeks... I've only had the thing that long...

Oh well - thanks anyway...

5 weeks? no freaking way! If you want to take a trip to the US, any of us should be able to have it back to you in a matter of days (<24 hours best case scenario).

Since your PB is only a few weeks old it is still under warrenty. A phone call to Applecare should see a return box delivered the next day.

The repair should take about a week including transit (which will feel like eternity without your new shiny Mac but a big improvement on 5 weeks!

Call AppleCare
