I once sold an iBook 500 and was able to restore it to power up just like out of the box when I sold it (registration, etc). Now I'm planning on selling my G3 900 iBook, but I can't seem to get it to power up like when I bought it. It will only boot with the OS X install disk (10.2.4) and then you have to install OS 9 with the Software Restore disks. The problem is that in order to restore the software I have to create a user in the registration. When I do that and restore the software I can find no way to get the registration to come back up. Is there a way around creating a user in the registration or a way to delete that user once the software is restored? I could just install OS 10.2 and let the buyer restore the software after they register, but I'm afraid whoever buys it might not know enough to do that. Any ideas?

I think I might have found an answer on a post regarding a lost password on an iBook listed on 5/3/04. It says to boot into single user mode and delete the home directory and the NetInfo database. I typed the commands it listed, which are:

mount -uw /
rm -rf /var/db/netinfo
rm -f /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
find /Users ! -name Shared -maxdepth 1 -type d | grep -v "/Users$" | xargs rm -rf

It appeared similar to my situation and seems to have worked. The iBook boots into the registration and I restored OS 9 and all the software prior to this.

Can anyone think of possible problems this might cause the buyer of my iBook? If so, please let me know so I have a chance to correct it. Otherwise, problem solved.

Well, I have recently done the same to my iMac DV since I am selling it. What I did was boot up from the OSX CD and re-partition and zero the drive, it was strange and pleasant installing all the original OS9 software from the CDs.

Anyone in the UK want to buy a Lime iMac?...... (don't worry I'll sell it in the proper place)
