Have any of you had your iBook logic board replaced under this program? Have any of you had issues that should have been covered, but your serial number was outside of the range?

Just yesterday, the video went out on my iBook. No internal video; no external video. Basically, this points straight to the graphics chip on the logic board, which is the whole point of Apple's program. Unfortunately, my iBook is not within the serial number range. I'm just curious if I'm alone in this (and therefore it's just my logic board going bad) or if other people are in the same situation.

Thanks.

People... you are putting me off buying a iBook permanently. I hope the iBooks start to sort themselves out with time, or else I'm never buying one.

Since this useless response is all I got, it looks like I'm alone in this one.

Oh well... I was drooling over the power books anyway...

I've seen several posts here by people whose iBooks weren't in the advertised serial number range for automatic logic board replacement, but when they called Apple (and got to the right level in tech support), they got their boards replaced. Have you gone that route?

And as for the other response you got, does it seem to everyone else that there are a lot of people who don't bother to do any research beyond reading headlines (or subject lines)? Sure, Apple had problems with some logic boards, but they have set up a very expensive program to make it right with as many customers as they can. Nobody is forcing them to do a recall, they're doing this on their own, and they have a lot of even more devoted customers because of it. Now and then other problems crop up, and they address them, but that's part of dealing with technology.

Ok, I posted that response...

Actually I'm twitching to get myself an ibook along with my emac, BUT I live in South Africa, where AppleCare is not offered. So, after the 1 year warranty period, you are pretty much on your own.

I really hope the logic board problems have been sorted out in the newest models. As soon as I get sufficient evidence of that (yes, I do research) , I'll get myself one pronto!

I think you'll find two things true about Apple-they give you a lot for their money, and they stand behind what they sell. There are a LOT of people with older G3 iBooks who had their logic boards replaced out of warranty because Apple concluded that the problem was important enough to do that. With a company like Apple, you don't need to worry too much.

(Of course there are issues where you have to be assertive-"this is the third time you've said that replacing XX will fix the problem, and it hasn't yet..."-but these are pretty rare.)

What iBook, specifically, do you own? Per the above link, the program covers all iBook G3s 600/700s with 16MB of VRAM (8MB in the 600, IIRC)released in May 2002 to the G3/900s (discontinued in October 2003).

It's an iBook (Late 2001), built in February of 2002. The serial number starts with UV205... and the serial number range starts at UV220...

I'm also waiting to hear back from a supplier about the possibility of upgrading the logic board to a 16 VRAM for the added processing/RAM/graphics power.

there are thousands of people affected not in the serial number range. have only been researching for 4 days and its a huge worldwide problem.yes its usually the video chip failing. apple are totally paranoid about the problem..removing my posts and others from their discussions. all affected users must get together and squeeze them hard to ownup to the problem..have started a forum at www.se-asia.com/ibook..please add your story..also a petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/ibook1...on-sign.html..
to quote the movie.."i'm mad as hell and i wont take any more'
DO IT !!
