Although i dont own an ibook (i own a G3 i-mac) I was just pondering if apple will do away with the ice look for the next revision since its been around since 2001 if right. If an update does come before years end i wouldnt expect much(minor cpu,gpu upgrade),maybe slimmer 14" ibook due to waisted space around keyboard.
currently deciding over the next few months to get a 15" powerbook or tope of the line 14" ibook.
any thoughts on revisions

I have no basis for this other than my gut, but I think the current white casing will last a while longer.

In fact, it has already had a slight change (from Glassy Ice: "white under glass" (okay, plastic) to Frosted Ice:"flat white". And the text for the model name went from serif (those little things sticking off of letters) to sans serif (meaning without serifs). A gradual change starting with the low end 700 MHz iBook.

I think the design will stay pretty much as-is for a while. It's a great mix of durability, design, and size/weight. The only way to improve it would be to shave a few points of an inch off each dimension and make it out of aluminum.

I think colored iBooks would be cool again. With different colors than the last time they had colored iBooks.

they will be thinner and lighter in the next revision, which is soon. if they remain plastic, i would guess they will still be white, that is unless the upcoming 4th gen ipod changes from white to something else.

Does anybody else think that the new iBook looks really bad in comparison to the original ice book?
I just stopped by the Apple store and was shocked to see the nasty plastic used on the current iBooks. I know asthetics are alwasy subjective, but this one would seem to be a good candidate for a universal reaction?
To get back on topic....I hope an iBook revision comes out before school starts.

huh? isnt that space there so the bottom matches the screen size... i dont get what youre trying to say here.
i have a feeling that the design will stick around for a while, except for maybe colors, but past that, i dont really know how apple could improve it.

Agree completely. I have an original Ice and the only thing stopping me from buying a new one is that they don't look as solid.

Thats a shame because we really want to buy my sister an iBook but are afraid she might break it. She's not allowed unsupered net access so no Airport card for her yet!

I had a G3 600 Mhz and the build quality was the worst of an Apple I've ever owned. Now, I have a G4, 1GHz and it is sooooo much better than the G3. The build quality seems better, the keyboard is much better and the CD slot beats the heck out of the tray.

Otherwise you'd get her a powerbook? You can restrict her Airport access through WEP (which I hope you have enabled)

The keyboard and CD slot are deffinite improvements. It's the outer shell and plastic around the keyboard that feel cheaper.

I had the first Dual USB iBook, which cost me about $800 more maxed out, and I have the new 1Ghz iBook. This new one is much sturdier. The plastic is textured and does look less sophisticated but unlike the first iBook it won't wear by friction as easily. Keyboard is 200% better and a slot loading drive is nice.
I would trust this to be more intact after a fall than the first white iBook.
I doubt that we will see a new revised iBook design before next May or around the time the G5 Powerbook comes out.. which ever is first. Silver that isn't metal would look ugly. Metal finish is for the Pro line, Apple won't give it up to the consumer iBooks or iMacs.

I would like to see a revised iBook design. When it will happen is up to Apple, but certainly there is always room for improvement. And I certainly wouldn't mind the return of color to the iBook.
Mind you, I'm not suggesting we go back to the old, all colorful iBooks, but perhaps something more subtle this time, maybe partially white and partially color, perhaps borrowing from the iPod mini colors, or a contrast of white and silver or "coffee" (like previous PowerBooks).

I do! While I can't comment on build quality, I have seen the new iBooks. I just can't adjust to seeing the solid white after having been used to the "crystal" effect on the older iBooks (not to mention the cheaper looking type face for the lettering — it just doesn't look Apple-esque; I like the look of Apple's corporate font (that's what they used, right?)).
If I ever do get an upgrade, it will be to the 12" Powerbook, which I think looks a bit better (plus, it still has the old type face for the lettering).

That's what they "did" to the 12" iBook to get the 12" Powerbook.
