I'm getting a lot of noise out of my 900MHz G3. It's not too noticeable if I have nothing plugged into the jack, but if I have head phones or speakers plugged in, it's really annoying. Especially through the subwoofer. It sounds like the speakers are picking up some sort of clicking noise. Any one have any ideas?

Of course, my warranty ran out on May 23, and I opted not to buy Apple Care. Figures...

you dont have an unregistered version of either mbeat or synergy? one of them has a "feature" where if you dont register, noise is added to the lineout until you do...

Nope, I don't have either of them installed. I can't really explain the what it sounds like, but the thing that comes to mind is a loose plug that gets amplified every time it jiggles.

have you tried muting the speakers via the os if you still get the sound its probably hardware related if you don't get the sound its probably software. also does it make a difference if the book is plugged in or not that might be related.

is this when you dont have anything pluged in? i know you said its not as loud when nothing is pluged in but make sure you can still hear it. if not then when you have stuff pluged in it is a ground loop, caused by differences in resistance in your electrical wiring. you can do a few things like tape off any ends or buy grounds like xitels from xitel.com.. i know this because my PC is pluged into my stereo and i used to get that noise all the time.. but if not then im not really sure about the inside on the ibook.

I tried turning the sound off in system preferences, and i'm still getting the noise. Strangely, it only happens when the machine goes to sleep. And it does do it with nothing else plugged in, not even the power cord. I guess I have to lug it into the repair shop.
