Hi,
I bought a TiBook 800 about 18 months ago, and the DVD/CD-R drive just stopped reading CDs and DVDs : when I insert anything in the slot, the drive "eats" the disc as usual, makes that small positioning noise it always does, and then just spits it out. It doesn't seem to even try to mount it.

Any ideas ? Is there any test I could do to see if my drive is physically broken ?

Thanks in advance

Ok I found this thread and tried to prevent the drive from ejecting the CD (by blocking it with my finger the first time it's spat out), and now the problem is gone : every CD is read fine.
Should I still worry about my drive ?

Actually it sometimes needs 2 attempts to read some discs, so the problem is not entirely gone...

All I can say is that is not normal. Sounds like it may end up needing a new drive in the future. Most likely the drive is out of calibration which cannot be fixed that I know of.

You could replace the drive yourself. I have the instructions since i am planning on upgrading mine to a superdrive and it's not really any more difficult than what the owners manual lists for replacing the hard drive. If the drive is mission critical I would suggest replacing it otherwise wait until it finally gets bad enough to need dealing with. You can get replacement drives at places like powerbookreq.com but I am not sure if they will ship overseas.
