I've been told that although the 12" powerbook screen has the same resolution as the 12" ibook it is actually a better quality screen in that it is an active TFT screen vs a TFT XGA. Can anybody explain the difference or comment if in fact the new 12" powerbook screen is better than the 12" ibook screen?

You have your terminology mixed up. While it may be true that some 12" PowerBook screens are higher quality than 12" iBook screens, they use the same technology.
TFT: thin-film transistor. This is the technology used to make active matrix screens that basically all LCDs use. Years ago they were an expensive alternative to passive matrix screens, but nowadays all LCDs use active matrix TFT displays.
XGA: XGA stands for "eXpanded Graphics Array," which is just a fancy way of saying 1024x768 resolution. Resolution of the display has almost no effect on quality.
Again, I am not sure if the 12" PowerBook has a better screen than the 12" iBook (there is currently a thread in this forum about the subject), but if there is a difference it's because they use different brand screens, not because they use different technology.

Both the 12" iBook and the 12" AlPB use XGA TFT screens. From comparing them in the stores, they're the same screen, although there is a thread in this forum that speculates about different scrrens from different suppliers.

You can compare them side by side in the shop. When I compared them (with a few adjustment of the screen settings), I noticed the viewable angel of the PB 12 is not as good as PB 15 or PB 17. But iBook 12 is worse than PB 12 in terms of brightness and view angle.

Gentlemen, don't forget before and after Color Calibration make a difference too.
From what I can see using the same color profile (default ones) and brightness level, both 12" iBook and 12" PowerBook looks like the same screen.

I have just recently purchased a PB 12'. I have been using a iBook G4. My experience is the PB screen displays better quality. The colors are richer and fonts are more consistent. The ibook appeared somewhat "washed-out", with a lighter color consistency.
This is not to say the iBook was not a good computer, it is clear the PB line enjoys better craftsmanship.
