by which i mean... i understand that apple uses different manufacturers for the 12" screens. and at least one of those really blows - meaning a really lousy lcd on the 12". can anyone confirm which manufacturer makes the relatively decent 12" screen?

There's no easy way to tell the part number/manufacturer without finding out from someone who's actually opened up the display module of the particular PowerBook revision that you own.

I do know that Apple has been using Samsung LCDs in their PowerBooks for some time, so you might want to check their list of LCD Modules.

It seems to me that I've read Apple uses two suppliers for their LCDs, Samsung and LG Electronics.
