i was looking at other posts and am now even more confused. i want to get more ram prefereably a 512 stick for my 15" 1.5ghz pb.

what confuses me are the many different specs on the ram, latency, 2.5 something, 2100 or 2700, ecc, etc.

i dont know anything about it, but i want the FASTEST ram that is compatible with my powerbook.

any tips?

For your Mac you will need to use PC 2700 333Mhz 200 pin SODIMM. Though your PB will take up to 2GB, it's cheaper right now to get 512MB sticks than 1GB sticks.
Several places on the web offer ram at a variety of prices. Some places have generic ram which I have always used with no issues but that's not always the case with everyone but you can have problems with name brand ram even if it's more expensive so it's all about reputation and what you are willing to spend.
Here are some places to look for ram.

Crucial:

1-800-4-memory:
http://www.18004memory.com/cart/addc...p;itemTYPE=cat

Memory to Go:
http://www.memorytogo.com/

Deal Ram:
http://dealram.com/prices/systems/23073/512MB.html

Deal ram will be the cheapest route to go but it doesn't mean that it's generic ram isn't good.

FYI, bad ram can come cheap or expensive but the only thing that can happen are Kernel Panics and that should be a red flag that you have bad ram.
Hope this helps out.

There's also OWC: www.macsales.com or www.transintl.com.

Lot's of good user reviews for these two stores. I"ve bought from Transinternational, and they're quality from my experience.

hey guys...
at this link ot the OWC store:

http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgr...=Show+Upgrades

there are two options for memory, one is 134.95 and the other is 109.99. besides the price, anyone know the difference? they say both are compatible with the pb 1.5ghz. and the tech specs match up, so why the huge price difference??

thanks!

One module is called Techworks and the other one is nameless so the cheaper one may be generic. Sometimes even popular name brands will vary largely in price. Hard to tell, which is why it's a good idea to see if anyone has used certain ones. I don't know if this is the best analogy but generic ram to computers is like generic medicine to humans. It's cheaper but does the same job. As I mentioned earlier I have had absolutely good luck saving money and buying generic ram for all of my Macs.

I think I bought the cheap one for my PowerBook, but might be replacing it with a 1 GB card. I only buy from OWC, so I'd say they are good stuff. Check the 1 GB SODIMMs tho. They are very tempting, now they are around $320.

I am successfully using Mushkin's PC2700 1GB SODIMM with my new Rev. C 1.33GHz PowerBook 12". I have run the Apple hardware test a couple of times and I've used the unit for a week or so. No problems have surfaced so far. All seems to be well.

www.mushkin.com Look under laptop memory. The price is $322 and if you use the coupon code DDRDEAL you'll get a 10% discount. Shipping was free for me.

If you aren't familiar with Mushkin, they are a reptable enthusiast RAM vendor for the PC. They stand behind their product and have a lifetime warranty and generous return policy.

I bought Generic 512MB Ram from 18004memory.com (Coast to Coast Memory) and it kept causing Kernal Panics left and right.

Check out the GEIL golden dragon pc2700 SODIMMs. I have 2 of those in my 15" 1.33 pb. I've actually used 6 of these sticks before (only 2 at a time, of course), and found one to be defective (b/c it reported 256mb, rather than 512mb). Outpost.com RMA'ed that stick w/o much trouble.

Theire chips are in small packages (you'll notice this if you look at a picture), which supposedly has some sort of advantage. Latency is CL2.5. I haven't looked around enough to find CL2 sticks, but I'm sure you would not notice the difference in performance. I roughly stress-tested these chips in 2 ways: 1) ran 'top' in a terminal, and opened up any and all programs I could until it started swapping, and 2) played c&c generals for a few hours. The bottom got hot, but it got hot before the ram, too.

$105 at outpost.com for 512mb stick. You get a fancy magnetic case, too.
