Your friend Use it, love it.
Ti has L3 cache that speeds up some proc-intensive apps like iDVD or PS, whereas Al has no L3 but twice the L2 cache (and it is on-chip - 512K) running at CPU speed that enhances overall snappiness. Ti has 133 MHz system bus, whereas Al models have 167 MHz. Al models use faster RAM with faster memory bus. etc, etc.

A year ago, we purchased a Ti PowerBook for our department chairman. The Ti PB spent most of 2003 bouncing back and forth to the dealer because of defects in the display. Apple replaced the Ti with a Al PB in January. The display problem was never solved.
The big difference is that the chairman is actually using the Al PB, which seems to be heavier and more solidly built than the Ti PB.

My only complaint about the TiBook is the hinge design. It only opens so far...

You are lucky not to have a second problem of badly designed cooling system and incessant fan noise...

The Ti 1Ghz is a much louder model. I had that machine for about a year, and by the end, it was driving me crazy with that over-eager fan. I could be sitting in a mildly warm room doing word processing and that fan would come on, and make itself known.
The Alubook is near-silent.

The TiBook was too damn sensitive. It couldn't take ANY abuse whatsoever! My Lil' MoFo (Rev. B 12" PB G4, that has a 133mhz bus, BTW) is much sturdier and doesn't feel as flexible. That may be due to the smaller size.

The difference between the ti and the Al is that the Ti is brittle and rigid while the Al is flexible and soft.
As usual apple left one really annoying thing in the albook. It's made of aluminum. This means your $2000 laptop is about as structurally sound as a japanese soda can (about 3x stronger than a normal pepsi can) -- but still not quite amazing for a laptop.
