I'm looking for a dock for my 1.5gHz 15" Aluminum Powerbook...am I to believe that Bookendz is the only producer of such an item; if so, I'm soliciting reviews; if not, may I get the name of others that I should consider?

Apple laptops are not made for docks.

The dock could also do some serious damage to your laptop in that it requires very precise alignment for the connections to be made. It's not efficient, it's not worth the trouble.

If you wanted a dock-able laptop... there are nice PC's made by Dell, Sony, and IBM. Apple laptop's don't dock.

Also, you're lucky that the database is going haywire... because I would suggest searching for the answer since this has been discussed before.

For future reference... search

im assuming you have never heard of the powerbook duo series, the second smallest apple laptop according to apple.

this is the powerbook duo that i own, and heres the dock to dock it up.

you should also be informed that there are powerbook docks, are here

although in my opinion the tibook endz are much better

for your future reference: search

PowerBook DuoDock Plus/II
Introduced: April 1994

PowerBook DuoDock
Introduced: October 1992

Your assumption was incorrect. I am very familiar with apple-history.com and have seen those laptop bios before.

How are either one of these relevant when the poster asked about his 15" Powerbook? I mean... it's cool you have vintage Mac equipment and I am aware these existed but these aren't even close to the solution he is looking for. And I am right... Apple laptops are not made for docks. Apple produces no docks for their current line-up of laptops. They don't even design them so it is efficient (like a PC) or feasible (no ports on the rear of the laptop). The Powerbook currently produced simply do not have any ports for easy sliding in and out access for ports.

But if you want to suggest to our forums newcomer to sell his 15" and purchase a vintage 12+ year old laptop... you're the one saying it, not me.

Back to the Bookendz, there are numerous reports about how precisely you need to line up the port on either side of the laptop before docking. The reports clearly mention the ability to damage the laptop when putting uneven stress on the openings. However, I do recall reading a thread on this forum in the past about the TiBook having an easier time porting than the AlBooks. But, our reader has an AlBook. Just like you and I.

But, Rag... we're were never talking about TiBooks either.

RSLeonard: Some people swear by their BookEndz docks. Others find it just as easy to plug in and unplug a few cables.

I have to admit that a dock for the 15-inch PowerBook, which has ports on both the left and right sides, seems a bit clumsy. But the BookEnds docks do work. Personally, I'm planning on buying one, but for the 12-inch PowerBook, which has all ports on the left side.

Sure wish Apple was still making a PowerBook Duo with Duo Dock! Have a look at this old PowerBook Duo ad and this second one. Even a decade later, the Duo Dock is still absolutely brilliant.

PS for velodev: Get off your high horse, for cryin' out loud!

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

i see how i came off to be hostile, i just didnt understand that you were talking about current generation laptops, i thought you were saying they never made a dockable laptop. i definitly agree that the current gen of powerbooks were not made for docking, which is disapointing.

by saying the tibook endz were better, i was just saying that because the ports were on the back, unlike the current gen.

i liked those videos, where do you those old commercials? is there a giant archive?

who thinks that the idea of a powerbook dock would work well? like the duo dock, but engineered for powerbooks. i think it would work by sliding in, like a duo, then the ports would come out from the sides. the ultimate clamshell design!

The PowerBook Duo ads did come from a giant archive. But unfortunately, the archive went down years ago. I downloaded those two QuickTime ads onto my PowerBook 520c sometime in 1995 or 96. From there they moved on to a Wallstreet G3, a Bondi iMac, a PowerBook 2400c, my current iBook/500, and finally to my .Mac homepage.

I'm planning on building myself just such a Dock, as soon as I buy my new 12-inch PowerBook (it's looking like August now). Aside from the small size and light weight of the 12-inch, the fact that all the ports are on one side, which will make for easy docking, is a main draw.

I assume you mean a design for operation in clamshell mode, i.e. with the PowerBook closed an external monitor, keyboard and mouse connected, right?
