I have a Ti800, 80Gb, 1Gb
This weekend it broke my PowerBook screen's left hinge. Thought I could change that part only... so I waited until a few hours ago to see my Apple Store.
I went to my local Apple reseller, saying I didn't have an Apple care for that computer. He replied it didn't matter, that it wasn't covered by AppleCare anyway...
The bad news : I must change the complete screen (expensive !!!)
The good news : The outside of my Ti 800 will be brand new because they change everything
I would have kept my PB for another 2 years anyway... it wasn't a good time to buy a brand new PB... I'll wait until next revision
What would you do ?

k, cool, I get it now! (being slow today). I thought it was just a hinge issue...
In that case, hmm, I'd probably get it fixed if you are going to keep it for another 2 years... Perfect timing (probably) for a Rev b G5 (* or equivalent) Powerbook...

Hmmm ... I haven't had any hinge problems with my TiBook (yet) but PBparts seems to be selling single hinges for the TiBook for something like $129.00. Even with shipping from the US to Europe that should be a helluva lot cheaper than a new screen, no?
Cheers + good luck with your PB!

This is really a bummer. I'm curious about how your hinge broke. My TiBook 667/DVI is still workin' great (I just jinxed myself...I know it... ).

It fell a long time ago... I guess the hinges got stuck that day... but not completely stuck, just a little
It felt pretty hard to open in the last months but not enough for me to worry.
And then one day it broke !
I fell bad to spend so much money on an old powerbook but I need the computer back fast, and I can't afford a new one

If it literally is just the hinges, how come the Applestore said you need a whole new casing and display?
Could it be worth getting a second opinion?
(Any chance you could post some pics of the damage?)

In fact on a Ti 800 the hinges can't be separated, it's glued. As it's the top part I have to change the whole thing.......

Why not just hook up an external monitor till the new revisions come out, you'll be stuck with a desktop instead of a laptop but atleast you'll save yourself some cash when it comes to getting this one fixed (not worth it if you ask me seeing how expensive the screens are especially the whole top half) and then getting a new G5 PB when it comes out (going to cost a fortune!!!).

Because I need a laptop, not a desktop... I'm moving a lot with my Ti (that's why it's broken maybe...)

I still wouldn't cough up lots of cash on an old notebook, personally I'd buy another 'book on ebay (relatively cheap nowadays) chuck yours on ebay after you get the purchased one (for no downtime seeing how you need your notebook n all) and the difference would be lots cheaper then repairing the whole top half, but hey thats only what I would do.

i have a TiBook with dead pixels and i did some research on new screens and it turns out that it's really not worthwhile to replace the screen, it's about $1800CND to replace the screen, might as well get a new PB.
If you find another option let me know.

There's an option missing in that poll - get a refurbished PB from Apple or an outlet that ships internationally (e.g. smalldog.com) - they come with a one year warranty and are eligible for Apple Care.
For about $1,200.00 (= under 1,000.00 EUR) you'd get a 12" Rev. B 1GHz PB - probably not much (if any) more expensive than buying an entire screen assembly for a TiBook.

I just noticed a 667 on ebay ion the UK for parts as the motherboard had failed.
The bottom case was £2, the top keyboard surround was £5 and the screen was about £20... all other parts were £10-£20
May be worth a look for a complete quick fix.

I looked for a complete display, and all of them were too expensive (more than what the Apple Store wanted me to pay)
I'll have my powerbook tonight, it will be brand new (complete new casing, speakers, trackpad and screen)
Maybe that just means I'll sell it instead of keeping it that long
Thanks for you help/advices

Excellent! I can't believe this is a single glued-together part... Maybe that's why the displays are so thin...

Everything is OK, except that the backlight doesn't seem to be plugged in. Any idea what wire I should plug ?

This whole thread is nonsense. There are a couple places in the US that will replace a broken hinge for less than $400USD. The same thing happened to a TiBook I used to have. Just so some research. You can easily ship from Europe. Most authorized Apple repair places will tell you they need to replace the entire LCD unit costing at least $1350USD. That's also Apple's line. It's also nonsense.

I went to the store when it openned this morning.
It was one of the cables that was not plugged properly... these guys are bad
So if one of you sees a dimmed screen or a flickering (sp ?) light, just check the screen cable first
Thank again for your help
Maybe one day I'll help another PB user with the infos I now have !

I had it done by Wegener media, here: http://www.wegenermedia.com/indexa.html
But there are plenty of places that will do it for about $400USD. Wegener was good and fast.
Just google "Powerbook hinge replacement".
