Just wondering, can you put the machine to sleep, take out the battery and put in a new charged one without having to turn off the machine? I've heard it was possible but I figure I should check up on it.
Thanks.

Read your manual. This is only possible on the 15" and 17" models. The 12" does not have a backup battery. You have to shut the machine down to exchange the battery.

It is possible. At least on my 17".
Works like a charm.
I just make sure that I quickly change the batteries. Have the new battery ready to insert.

Thanks, I'm getting a 17, the main reason I'm buying the extra battery...
Macpilot: Do you get at least over 2 hours just doing basic stuff? Like, web surfing, checking e-mail, listening to some tunes? When I'm at my desk I'll have it plugged in, but could I watch a movie.. say about 1:45 without the battery dying?

It works on my 15" Ti, but only with Apple batteries. I have a third party battery that I can't hot swap with. Putting the battery in while the machine is asleep prevents it from waking back up.

The worst battery life (I tested it) I ever got was 1:50 and that was running full screen brightness and watching a DVD.
The best I ever get is around 3:00, but that is with all energy saving settings enabled.
I would say the battery life on the 17 is its only real negative, but that is why I bought a second battery. Apple's advertised battery life is a total lie. But I think that is the way it has always been with electronics and their advertised battery life.
What is wierd is that the original battery will not give me the little warning message when it is about to die, but the new one will.
