does this happen to anyone else? When I watch dvds and such it is fine but for some reason when I burn a music CD, once i take it out of the ibook, the CD is covered with mannyy scratch marks(a brand new cd that I just unwrapped), and not just regular scratches you get from normal use, like 60 scratches in one tiny area to make it one big indent and then it repeats throughout the cd. Now im concerned about what that is doing to the inside of my ibook considering the damage to the CD. the damage to the cd was so bad that it actually made the disc unplayable in my stereo.

ok now just putting ANY cd into the optical drive will cause it to endure heavy damage from scratches. Any cd that comes out of the ibook will be scarred. I put a dvd in there and as it was coming out, it got stuck and went back in by itself. I had to pull it out right when it gets stuck or else the whole process will repeat. Thumping noises came from the combo drive as well, as if the spinning disc was imbalanced or something and it just hits the inside of the ibook every time it spins.

so I have apple care and the ibook itself is still under the 1 year apple warranty. I will be calling apple tomorrow because it is fathers day sunday today.

oh and considering backing up files... I backed up essays and assignments with my iphoto library, addressbook, and of course all my music in the ipod. I also made it so I updating songs are manuel in iTunes. but if they do for some strange reason just reformat the hd, will itunes erase my ipod next time I connect it to the computer because syncing is automatic as default?

oh and would I get better service at an actual apple store (bellevue square) or would they just ship it off to applecare. sorry ive never had to send in anything with apple before so i'm inexperienced in this area. thanks .

They may just ship it off to Apple; they may do it themselves. Which way you get better service just depends on the individual doing the repair. Shipping it off to Apple is by no means guaranteed perfect.

^ yeah thats what I hear from these boards. There are some good cases but there are also some bad ones.

I got of the phone with apple today, the rep was pretty nice and after I told him of the problem he told me they're going to be sending a box for me and everything is covered. Probably only going to replace the optical drive but he said to back up any files I want on the ipod just in case. Oh it would have cost around $600 with shipping and labor to replace the drive O_O yay applecare but the ibook was still under 1 year warranty. I'll post later to tell you guys how it turned out.

I don't know where this story came from that plugging an iPod into a new or different computer than your own will cause it to be erased. I remember when I got my iPod years ago someone was busying trying to tell me that they sucked because of that very reason. I have my suspicions that writers for PC magazines who had never used an iPod and were rightly jeralous that at the time there wasn't a PC version decided to just bag it instead.

So in answer, it is on autosync by default BUT if you plug in an iPod that is linked to a different library, iTunes asks you whether you want to link the iPod to the new library and therefore erase the old songs or to do nothing and allow you to manually manage the songs. This also only applies to the songs that you put on the iPod via iTunes, things on the iPod HD that you access via the finder are unaffected whatever you choose.

If you want to erase the whole iPod you need to use the iPod update utility and that will erase the iPod and reset it to factory defaults.

^thanks for the reply, yes I soon figured that out when I plugged into my brothers pc with the ipod.

ok so I got the ibook back today. first of all the service I have to admit was excellent. I called on monday, recieved the box on wednesday. I shipped it out on thursday. was recieved by apple on friday, repair completion by sat, and I recieved it back on monday. I just opened the box, cleaned some black smudges that was left on the ibook here and there and it is good as new. Apparently the only thing that was replaced was the combo drive so no data backup was even needed.

So I tested the combo drive with a dvd and its works perfect. I think quieter than my old one. The whirring noise it makes when you first put a cd into it and as it settles down is a lot more high pitched now and it goes in and out faster than it used too.

So for me, a good applecare experience.
