Just bought a brand new powerbook aluminum 12"
tested a dvd last night and was very suprised by the amount of noise it created.
I stuck the dvd in, and nothing happens until the dvd is 1/5 hanging out the side, then suddenly its pulled in, and that's when the loud noise comes in
is this normal? I've never heard of any drive that makes such loud noises on load up (and I've owned a slot-loading drive before)

just wanting to know if this is normal ...

thanks for your time

yes it is normal. the powerbook combo/super drives are ungodly loud. never in my life have I ever owned an optical drive as loud as these ones are. gave me a good little scare at first too.

Also, wait till you put in something it has a hard time reading (like a burned disc with a few sectors starting to go bad). It will get really loud while trying to read the parts going bad.

i rarely put cd's in there unless i need to load something now a days .. sounds like a leaf blower .. i thought it was just because it was a slot drive .. guess it's the drive itself then ...

Same here it scared the sh** out of me the first time I used it, first thought that popped into my head "Oh-oh, now I'm gonna have to return this baby, and I've only had it for 2 hours ... "
But after some askin around people told me it was normal, took some getting used to tough ...
