Can you get an educational discount from a non-Apple store?

Hi,

Just wondering if it is possible to use an education discount at a store like compusa, or is it only possible through Apple directly. If I am not in a school, but work for one, can I walk into any college campus that sells apples, and use my education discount there?

i've heard from our departmental computer guy that CompUSA offers our department discounted 'academic' prices. i think.
