I just noticed that Apple has posted a Verizon broadband PC card access tool.
Does anyone know how this works. I know there have been drivers available for this card, but you needed to set it up initially with a Windoze computer. Does anyone know if this will bypass this and be able to set it up with your PowerBook? Thanks in advance.

According to some others that have tried this, you still need to activate in a windows laptop first.

WOOOHOOO, got the card modem today. Plugged it into my powerbook and presto. It asked if I wanted to activate the card, clicked yes and it worked. No need to configure on a PC works great, if a little slow. Very cool.

Very cool. I might have to get one now!

When you say it is a little slow, compared to what?

Could not find card on Apple website. Could someone please give more info? I am new to this. Do you need a base station or can you get on the internet anywhere a mobile phone can go? What model or name is it? How much per month? Must be quicker than dial up...yes?

You can find this card at the Verizon Wireless website. It costs $80/month and has fast downloads (300-500kbps to 2Mbps) and uploads of (40-60kbps). It only works in the Washington DC and San Diego area.

While invaluable for business users, the limited coverage area could be a drawback for many.

I would say it is like having a 28.8 or 56k modem in areas that do not have broadband access. But again, it can connect almost anywhere. If you need email access or like me have kids who drive you nuts in the car, as the commercial says priceless.

Just to clarify, does the $80/mo. fee include voice service (cell phone as well? Or is that an additional cost?

It is an additional service. The card specifically says not voice compatible. The good news is for $79 you get unlimited access.
