I think I know the outcome of this, but I'll run it by you guys anyway. I am experiencing the following (intermittent) issues with my Powerbook:
1. Applications loading very slowly. When this happens, I sit watching the beachball for a while, hearing what I think is the hard drive make a sound as if it is going "read...read...reeeeeeeeeeeeead". That is the consistant pattern for the sound. It continues until the application runs.
2. A startling sound which sounds very much like if you close the lid on your PB. I believe it is the heads parking, but it happens loudly and in the middle of doing something. This was also accompanied by a beep once.
3. Very slow startup times. This has started occurring just recently. I'll power on, the gray apple screen will be there for a good 4 minutes or so, the blue screen will appear and stay for another 4 minutes or so, then the two accounts I have appear ready to be logged in. Once logging in, it takes another 3 or 4 minutes for my dock to appear.
So there you have it in a nutshell. I have repaired permissions and verified the disk after booting to CD. I have also backed up my home directories just in case.
I think I'm going to be happy I purchased AppleCare last week.
Oh and FYI, I bought this PB refurbished shortly after Christmas.

no, this isn't smellevision.
but you only waited 9 hours.
and it sounds like you have a hardware issue, which should be handled immediately via AppleCare since you bought it.
Backup your data and get the thing fixed.

Your computer should have come with a hardware test program (either as a separate disc, or included on your System Restore Disc #1- instructions are printed on the disc). Pop that in and see if it finds anything.
