Well I got my combo drive replaced not long ago in my ibook and now every time I wake up my ibook from sleep by lifting the lid, the cd makes a whirring noise for a bit and then its normal. Before the replacement, no noise was made. I thought if you didn't have a cd in the drive, then the thing wouldn't spin because it is powered down when in sleep mode.. does anyone else's cd drive make a noise as you open up your ibook from sleep?

I'm experiencing the same noise with my 12" G4 800Mhz, ever since I bought it.

The noise doesn't bother me though, I believe it's normal.
It sounds like it's simply checking if someone inserted a CD while the iBook was asleep.

Moep has it-the drive has to check its status, so it repositions the laser to read the hub of a (potential) disc. That's all; nothing to worry about.
