Hi there,

A similar question was asked about how many of you have purchased applecare, but I was curious as to your opinions about my situation.

I recently purchased a 17" rev a 1ghz Powerbook for $1400 and then upgraded the memory to 1gb, so I say I spent about $1500 on it. The machine is beautiful with absolutely no flaws operationally or cosmetically. The person I bought it from said that he bought in August of 2003 which I just confirmed by calling Apple.

So the question is, do I take the plunge and get applecare for this machine which I am looking to upgrade I guess sometime next year when the g5 pb's come out? I work in a school, so I will get some discount - $239 for the applecare (is that the best price?). Is it worth it to spend another $239 for this older machine?

Again, I've had the powerbook for about a month and a half now, and it is flawless in every way. Let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

What if your LCD starts flickering in September? AppleCare is far cheaper than paying for a new LCD. Plus, it adds a lot to the resell value.

Hi,

I think you are right. I'll be looking over the next couple of weeks to get the applecare. Do you think $239 + tax will be the best price I can find? Let me know if I can get it cheaper somewhere else.

I think one of the main reasons I was hesistant about the applecare was the part of me who was looking to upgrade the internal hard drive myself, since I have a 60gb 5400 hard drive lying around. But considering the fact that I value the battery life and since I got 120gb and 80gb 7200rpm external hard drives, I figure the internal 4200 drive will do.

The comment you made about resale value is probably the key to this whole thing. Since I know that I will eventually want to upgrade, and since I am so crazy about keeping these things in mint condition, I think the applecare will definitely benefit me.

Let me know if there is cheaper applecare. And thanks so much for your comments!

I think $239 is the cheapest you can find it. That would be the student/edu rate I believe. It runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $349 for a powerbook otherwise.

It's foolish not to get applecare--too much can go wrong with sensitive laptops.

You can get an Apple Service Provider to put in a new HD, maybe for around $80 (you can get estimates from several ASP.) Wait until the 100 GB HD comes out and comes down in price, then consider whether to put it in.
