Newbee here....

Just bought a 60GB hard drive put it in an external USB/Firewire case, how do I get it formatted for Mac OSX? The one time the Powerbook saw it, it just said it was unreadable.

Use Disk Utilities in your Applications/Utilities/ folder. I suggest that you connect the drive to your computer via the Firewire connector, since not all external USB drives will mount under OS X (my DrivePak doesn't).
