Hey guys,

I currently have a 1GHz TiBook, and would like to upgrade its hard drive. Its currently a 60gb stock drive (5400rpm I think), and I was wondering whats the largest size 7200rpm drive/brand I can get in here, and if there are any guides.

Thanks,
Oliver

Any 2.5" hard drive on the market now will fit.

The drive in your machine is a 4200 RPM.

My personal favorite for notebook drives are the Hitachi (formerly IBM) TravelStar models, and that's what both my PowerBooks have in them now. Seagate (my favorite for desktop drives) recently started making notebook drives as well, and if they're anything like their desktop models, they'll run cool and super-quiet. I haven't tried one yet.

Hmm, I can only find 60gb 7200rpm Hitachi drives, my current drive is that size and I'd prefer something like 80gb or 100gb, is that possible in a 2.5inch drive?

The biggest sold now at 4200 and 5400 RPM is 80GB; the largest at 7200 RPM is 60GB. Seagate has announced -- but not yet shipped -- 100GB 7200 RPM notebook drives, though.

I wasn't aware that 100gb 7200rpm drives were even announced already. That's great news! I can't wait for some serious speed and size! Hopefully they will be out by xmas!

I know I'm resurrecting a dead dead dead thread, but couldn't be bothered to start a new one!

Has anyone tried:

Seagate ST9160821A Momentus 160GB 5400RPM ATA 8MB Hard Drive - OEM

cos it's only £76 all in. Also how tricky is it to replace a hdd in a TiBook. Cos I've got a 60Gb drive and 40 Gb of music...

Cheers!

Yes, it will work, but you may be limited to using only the first 137GB of the disk. I'm not sure if the TiBook chipset supports LBA48.

Ah... I see. So it may not be worth going the extra £4 for the 160 over 120. what's the conversion again - 160 GB is about how much actual space?

93% when using gigabytes as your unit (95% for megabytes, 91% for terabytes)... so 160GB is 149GiB and 137GB is 128GiB. 8GiB (worse case) for 4 quid isn't that bad for a laptop drive.

It may also be worth "bothering" to follow the rules. Ancient threads do not need to be brought back when it's just as simple to start your own.

Fine. I've been away, thought it would be more appropriate to use a thread that had all but the final piece of information that I wanted. Ah well.

I have now re-read the rules and seen that old posts are not wanted here. Fair enough

Though I am astonished at the lack of appreciation of the humour involved.

I see that I misunderstood your intent, and I apologize for being as harsh as I was. Please be aware of our rules, and that it's our job as mods to enforce them. And you would not believe how entirely awful things are for me today. For one thing, it's the second day of spring break (with a list of tasks that would take me four weeks to complete) and it's been raining HARD since Sunday night, preventing me from doing almost all of my tasks. Instead of having a week to catch up on some things, I've actually fallen behind! Sheesh!

Anyway, are any of the drives discussed in the old part of the thread still available? I'd think that after this long the whole market would have changed.
