Wondering how to set the screen brightness to a setting other than very low. Can this be done? Thanks

Uh, how about the screen brightness buttons conveniently located on your keyboard?

Don't worry about it. My father was oblivious to those buttons for well over a year.

Your other option is in the Displays prefpane in System Preferences.
