Headphone output sound quality?

I am thinking about purchasing a 12" PB for double-duty use as an MP3 player at work (instead of getting an iPod right now). Is the audio quality decent enough for this? Is it relatively 'clean' (ie. no electrical noise, etc)?

the headphone output is perfectly fine; i've used it in "pro audio" work sometimes.
having said that, a usb or firewire audio interface will be even better;
even an imic (about $40) works well...
try the headphone out first.

I doubt the iMic -- for $30 -- is appreciably better than the built-in audio, which is perfectly clear.
If you're going to bother with an external audio interface, go with something higher-end than that.

tooki, i thought the imic sounded a little better than the built-in output on my older powerbook (just the latency on the imic audio in rendered it useless)
but the audio out on the new powerbooks sounds great!

The 15" PowerBooks even have 24-bit, 44.1KHz audio (the 12 and 17" PowerBooks have yet to have their audio circuitry updated).

no matter what the bit-rate is, that does not effect the fact that the imic is outside of the powerbook's innards, making it clearer automatically.

I just got a 15" 1ghz Powerbook (first Mac), and everything is great. However, I just ripped a few CDs in iTunes in the Apple Lossless format and sometimes sound is less that desirable through my headphones. I'm using fairly revealing headphones (Grado SR-80s). They're not great, but good enough that they might be letting me hear a little too much. So I guess my question is what headphones are you guys using? I plan on getting some more portable headphones, definitely by the time I pick up an iPod. So do you think a less revealing headphone would solve my problem? Thanks!
