PowerBooks don't come with AppleWorks. Only iBooks, and maybe their other desktops.

If you need a free and quick alternative for word processing, try:

AbiWord - free word processor

Open Office - full office suite

Congrats on your new born baby, you will love it. It's a great machine, however AppleWorks only ships with the consumer level Macs like the iBooks and iMacs. You will have to buy AppleWorks if you want it or Microsoft Office Student/Teacher edition if you are a student.
No pun intended but don't let that ruin your good day.

P.S. If you have access to another Mac that has AppleWorks installed then you can hook up your Powerbook to that Mac via Firewire target disk mode or via Ethernet and transfer the AppleWorks program to your Powerbook .
