OK, let me share with you a painful story of my failures as human and faux-technician. My father has a first-generation (2001) white iBook that he's about ready to replace and give to his 9-year-old son. This weekend, I made the poor decision to take on the task of replacing its broken CD-ROM drive whose latch refused to close. Long story short, I finally managed to replace the drive (leaving out half the screws ) but now the iBook emits an odd, high-pitched whine when the A/C adapter is plugged in, and the left palmrest (over the hard drive, is it?) overheats to an extreme degree (more than it ever did before, certainly more than my 1st-gen 12" PBG4). He's backing up today, and then I guess tonight I'll give it another shot and see if I made any obvious, horrible mistakes that can be rectified. I should note that the first time I took it apart (before I really went all the way and replaced that infernal/internal drive) the A/C adapter whined but did not seem to work at all. Now, everything *works*, but at this frightful price. But I'm really at a loss... it wasn't the easiest dissemble job ever, but I know I didn't destroy anything in the process!

I've never specifically observed either of those issues. My guess on the whine is that somewhere, a vitally important grounding screw is missing.

As far as the heat... hmmm... make sure nothing is shorted out.
