Hello all,
Im planning to buy an iBook 500 dual USB which will be given to my dad. Im looking for 1 and have seen 1 with 320mb Ram and 10Gb HD. I myself have used an iBook 500 for 1.5 years but dat was in the 10.1/10.2 days.
So how does it perform under OSX 10.3? Does it play DVD's well? How is the finder experience (No Quartz extreme so)? Is it comparible with the iMacDV 400.
Im thinking of overclocking it to 600/100 for a speed increase, but seeing all those reports of logicboards dying on G3 iBook is this wise futurewise? I will be the 3th owner i think so smart or not.
Is the iBook 500 also included in the Logicboard program BTW.
Anyway main purposes of the iBook will be some light things like internetting, DVD playing some light games etc. Same stuff as on the iMacDV 400 with 10.3

There have been reports that 10.3 (Panther) has given new life to older machines. It's alot faster than 10.2 (Jaguar) so I wouldn't see any point in overclocking. The logicboard repair program has certain serial numbers it covers, go to apple.com/support for more info.

Well I have both machines you mentioned (and also a new eMac but that's another matter). All are running 10.3.4 really nicely - a big improvement over 10.2 which I only used for a short while.
My iBook 500 with 320MB RAM though not equipped with a DVD drive can play ripped DVD files from the HD quite well without skipping (BTW I've only ever ripped one just to see if it would work, I could count the number of DVDs I hav ever watched on any device on one hand)
I found that my iMac 400 with 512MB RAM was generally faster with its 7200rm HD and more ram - the iBook could rip CDs in iTunes a bit quicker.
Also my iBook is one of the first ones, went back for 3 repairs in 2 years (trackpad, backlight, CD-Rom drive) and is covered by the logicboard program.

My girlfriends iBook 500 with 640 mb of ram plays dvd's just fine and feels much "snappier" with 10.3.4. Honestly she's had no problems whatsoever. The revised logic board program now covers her book.

Well that's good to hear. It will be used just for some small tasks and DVD playing so. But i was interested to know how the user experience was with 10.3. I found my iBook 500 always a bit slow in 10.2 but offcourse i had higher uses to it. (think i played Warcraft 3 on it) And know using a iBookG4 and coming form an iBook G3 800, it's hard to recollect my memories of the speed of iBook 500.
Now only need to find 1 here in Holland. Cheap **** always wants highes prices when selling.
(iBook 700 for €900???? ) but there are alway people that give that kind of money.

iguana9999: I just bought a new PowerBook and will shortly sell my trusty iBook G3/500 with 544MB (32+512) of RAM and AirPort card. Send me a PM if you are interested.
From everything I have heard, the iBook G3/500 runs 10.3 Panther beautifully and more efficiently than 10.2. The posts above confirm this.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Runs fine, but you need at least 512 MB of RAM.
