hello!
for someone who had a mac since '85, i am not as bright nor computer sabby as i should be, sadly. anyway, after using my loving powerbook titanium 500 for over 3 years, i am finally buying one of those superdrive 12"... so the new computer should arrive by this weekend. my question to those out there wise and bright, how can i connect my old powerbook to new one to transfer music, data, etc to my new powerbook? settings, preference, etc. thank you in advance for your kind suggestions and replies. have a lovely tuesday and better tomorrow.

connect it via firewire, restart the TiBook and hold the "T" key which will enable target disk mode. Your TiBook's HD will show up on your 12" as an external HD, then just click and drag.

Or use a ethernet crossover cable and connect them together using file sharing and 'connect to server'. I prefer this to the firewire target mode.
You should be able to find both of these methods in full on the Apple support website.

But the Firewire target disk mode that iRez recommended is faster.
What I am interested in: Did you have Problems with your DVD drive in the Ti500? I sold my ToBook because of this and I'd like to know if other owners had these problems too.

An ethernet crossover cable is not necessary. Both the TiBook and AluBook have autosensing ethernet ports.

Bingo. The ethernet option works too but I think the Firewire option is faster.

Yes, in principle it is.
Network is 100MBit/sec = 12MByte/sec, Firewire makes 400MBit/sec = 50 MByte/sec (both theoretically).
But the internal disk with 4200rpm reads/writes something like 20MB/sec. The old TiBook drive maybe less.
So the difference between both modes won't be that big. But networking is more for permanent use with both machines running.
Greetings,
Michael
