Stay away from the Thinkpad with less than 32mb of video ram, it is bad news. They gave me one at work, I refuse to use it. It is nice, has a sweet keyboard, and 15 inch screen. The video card is weak, and the screen is not clear as one would hope.

And yeah the standard thinkpad with no addons obviously sucks the big one.

I was given a thinkpad at work as well. I am not sure how new it is, its running windows 2000 though. The one thing I noticed is how poor the battery life is on it. I can barely get 2 hours of it when just using microsoft word. Maybe it is just the way the company has it set up, but with no wireless or anything else running that is pretty bad.

Nah, thinkpads are good for on thing and one thing only - running linux.

I have only two things to say about the thinkpads:

1: They are probably among the most expensive mainstream laptops out there.

2: They are also among the best built and solid pieces of equipment money can buy when it comes to laptops.

If I get the chance, I would gladly have one and run Linux or FreeBSD on it

The professional models, yes. The consumer models (i.e. i Series) aren't so good - mine is (literally) falling apart after barely 3 years.

(Seriously - the strips of plastic on either side of the keyboard are *gone*, the left hinge is almost severed, there are cracks around almost every screw on the bottom, and the screen, when closed, is at roughly a 2 degree angle to the base)

Hopefully my new 15" will hold up better.

I'm envious of the IBM T42, even as much as I really like my 1.5Ghz 15", I wish the build quality and battery life was better. The Powerbooks aren't exactly flimsy though either! Excellent comparo!

IBM makes good laptops, in the windows world they do it right. They have that rapid restore function, and access IBM key to keep things up to date. After using my PB for so long, a black plastic laptop appears to be sub-average in just how it looks, etc. Moreover, if I had to use a PC, I would prefer to use IBM products.
