I have an ibook 600 mhz model with a dvd drive and am trying to connect it to a tv through apple's video out dongle. The adapter is the type with s-vieo and the video rca jack but no sound out. I can get an image to display on the tv but the ibook does not recognize the tv in the displays control pannel and the image on the tv is rolling, in black and white, and has three condensed copies right next to eachother, I thought this might be because the cable is sending computer resolutions and not putting the signal in to ntsc format, but i may be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas on what i could do to get my ibook to display correctly on a tv?

Couple of things to try. First set your computer resolution to 800x600 and put the computer to sleep and then wake back up while it is connected to the TV.
Second if that doesn't work totally shut down the computer and restart it with the computer hooked up to the TV.
I do this in hotel rooms when I am on hte road so I don't have to pay for the pay per view movies and found some sets in hotel rooms I have to do either one of these things 2 or 3 times to get the image stable. My main problem is older sets (more than 4 years old) most of the new ones I can get to work on hte first try.
Particularly though I have found the 1024x768 resolution to be a big issue with syncing on TV sets

Are you sure you have the right adaptor? I had a 600mhz iBook, and it used a cable with a long "headphone jack-like" plug on one end, and the standard 3 RCA jacks on the other (red, white, yellow). Apple has made a variety of video-out cables over the past few years, so maybe the particular adaptor you have isn't compatible?
Also, just to note, the TV will not show up in a control panel. You shouldn't have to change resolutions or anything, either. Assuming you have the right cable, and the TV is working fine, you should be able to just plug the cable in and it will work automatically. No configuration needed.

Thanks for the replies, turns out i had bought the wrong video adapter based on the advice of the employees of the apple store, i really tought they would know what they were talking about, but i guess not. The correct adapter was actually the stereo type plug that split into the 3 rca jacks, and now the setup is working perfectly, thanks again for your help!
